Sasthamcotta and Lake Tourism
Sasthamcotta is an attractive village situated about 75kms from the capital city of Trivandrum and about 27 kms. from Kollam Town. It is very near to Amrithapuri of Matha Amrithananthamayi. It is a beauty spot, a health resort and a centre of pilgrimage. Sathamcotta is the seat of the famous Dharma Sastha Temple.The place is gifted with natural beauty and is surrounded by hills and vallies. In the midst of the hills is the Fresh Water Lake. The place is blessed with salubrious weather and a population with amicable disposition. This holy place is well connected by rails and roads with every part of Kerala. The monkeys of Sasthamcotta Temple are believed to be the faithful entourage of the ruling deity. The Lord Ayyappa has a spiritual ambience about them. Many Foreigners all over the world are attracted by the pristine charm of Sasthamcotta. The boating (Vallam) through the Fresh Water Lake enjoying with gentle breeze is an unforgettable experience to tourists. The extensive freshwater lake here, is said to be the biggest of its kind in Kerala, which can truly be called as Queen of Lakes. Water supply to the Kollam town is met by purifying the water from this lake.
Sasthamcotta is a Pilgrimage centre too, mainly famous for the Dharmasastha temple here. The name Sasthankotta is linked to this temple. Kotta (Fort) of Sastha is Sasthamkotta. Lord Ayyappa is Dharmasastha here. The monkeys camping around the temple are considered the guest of the deity. The steps leading down from the temple is straight to the Freshwater Lake.
Sasthamcotta is the Taluk Headquarter of Kunnathur. All the essential offices and services are available here like, Munsif Magistrate Court, Police Station, Taluk Office, Taluk Hospital, KSRTC Bus Station, Fire Station (Allowed already, not yet started operation), Sub Treasury etc. This region represents a way of life a visitor might not have seen anywhere else.
